The Equipment Collection
Though I wish I could buy about 20 lenses, I am not made of money. Listed below is the short list of lenses that I have enjoyed enough when I rented to ear a permanent spot in my camera cube.
In addition, I have added a few of the pieces of gear that more often then not, land in the adventure bag before I head out.
Sony a7 IV Mirrorless Camera
Owned
Sony offers a nice balance old school camera and technology is a simply easy to use package. The alpha series is more catered to the “prosumer” with the plain alpha series (rather than the R or C) being the standard model. I purchased the IV as it was the latest at the time.
Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens
Owned
Sigma offers fast light lenses frequently for a fraction of the cost of what you can find at Sony. That said, not all that time do they have 100% compatibility with the Sony camera bodies. This is my general work horse lens that covers 80% of indoor event shots.
Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS Lens
Owned
This has become my favorite lens for two reasons. First, I find I quite enjoy macro photography, Second I quite like the 90 mm focal length. It isn’t the only macro lens out there for Sony E mounts, but it is the only true macro Sony lens.
Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Lens
Owned
The best telephoto I can reasonably afford. If you are going out to shoot birds, deer, or any other skittish animal, this is the lens for you. Only real downside with this lens, other than the weight, is you have to watch your lighting.
Sony FE 1.4x Teleconverter
Owned
A gentle teleconverter that can be used with a few of the Sony lenses. This one generally stays in the bag as it give a bit more reach and does not consume too much light.
Sony FE 2x Teleconverter
Owned
A more aggressive teleconverter that can be used with a few of the Sony lenses. This one does not always stay in the bag as it can be a bit more light hungry and has a tendency to soften photos more than I would like. That said, it can turn the 70-200 f4 macro into a full macro lens which makes it worth the purchase.
Peak Design Everyday Sling 3L
Owned
This is my general go to carry bag. In the event I am not going on a hike, I am either shooting photos for an indoor event, or shooting macro shots. Both my camera body plus the 90 mm or the camera body plus the 24-70 fit great in this bag. Just as a call out to the padding in the bag as well, it has been pulled of a table by a dog, with both the lens and the camera body surviving the trip!
Peak Design Camera Cube V2
Owned
This has become my storage and hiking solution. So far all my equipment fits nicely in this cube. Which makes keeping things clean and moving things around a breeze. It also slides into my adventure bag easily for last minute hikes.
CCS G3 Grey Harness-1
Owned
The solution to tired forearms. Ever go hiking with a 70-200 or a telephoto and 15 minutes in your forearms get sore? Or the strap digging into your neck starts to burn? Ache no more! The CCS G3 Harness allows you to mount your lens to your chest, taking the weight off your neck and arms.
